Nineteen-year-old Benjamin James McSwain joins the White Caps
Organization (similar to the KKK) and pledges total secrecy . . . a
blood oath with his signature in his blood at Devil’s Bend, Mississippi, in
1893. When Jason Cole was killed, did emotions rule rather than reason and evidence? Someone had to pay for the death of a rich man's son. Why was everyone in the courtroom armed and deputized? It was to thwart the White Caps from trying to rescue Ben McSwain from the courtroom. Without regard to sworn testimonies, the attitude of the twelve-man jury was fixed toward a conviction.
Thousands gathered to
watch the hanging. When the noose slipped and Ben McSwain miraculously
plummeted to the ground, without his neck breaking, it was considered a
Divine Deliverance. Twenty-three years after the murder, one of the two men who murdered the Cole brother, exonerates Ben by giving a death-bed confession. Three years later, the Mississippi legislature compensates Ben for the erroneous conviction. Ben’s courtroom unwavering claim of innocence and his prophetic vow to outlive the twelve men on the jury comes true . . . He outlives the last jury member by three days.
